Amicalola EMC and
Green Power
The Story of Green Power –
Several years ago, a group of
member-owned electric cooperatives in Georgia joined together for the purpose of
developing and marketing electricity from cleaner, greener Georgia sources. This
most- environmentally friendly power offers EMC’s power that will enable them to
contribute to a cleaner environment. Now, many years and a great deal of
research and development later, Green Power is reality. Renewable energy is
produced from sources like low-impact hydropower, solar, wind and biomass,
including landfill gas. Power generated from these resources creates less waste
and pollution than energy produced from most conventional sources such as coal.
What is Green Power?
The first Green Power project
began with biomass electricity from three North and Middle Georgia
landfills. The otherwise wasted methane contained in landfill gas is valuable
for electricity production; plus recovery and reuse also helps prevent methane
from entering the atmosphere and contributing to smog and global warming. In use
since the late 1970s, this method of producing biomass electricity is one of the
most mature and successful in the green power field. Supporting this project has
an environmental benefit equivalent to any one of the following:
• Taking 84,000 cars off the
road
• Planting 114,000 acres of
forest
• Reducing the use of coal by
1,890 railcar loads
• Decreasing the use of oil by
900,000 barrels a year
What Does This Mean to You?
July 28, 2005 Amicalola EMC
joined forces with twenty-eight other Electric Membership Corporations in
Georgia to work together to distribute Green Power to our consumers.
Amicalola EMC supports Green
power on behalf of you, our customer, making it part of the overall power mix on
the electric system – helping to make the
environment a little cleaner and greener for you and your family.
