The 2010 Washington Youth Tour will take place from June 10-17, 2010. The Washington Youth Tour is the oldest youth leadership program in the state of Georgia. It is a first class tour of our nation’s capital that includes meetings with state and national leaders, leadership training, and visiting select sites in Washington, DC. The students meet and discuss their views with students from other states while learning about history, government, and careers in public service. During the Washington Youth Tour, over 100 delegates from cooperatives all across the state of Georgia will meet and travel together. The trip will begin in Atlanta where the students will learn about Georgia’s 42 electric cooperatives and the electric cooperative industry at the headquarters of Georgia Electric Membership Corporation and Oglethorpe Power Corporation in Tucker. While still in Georgia, the delegates will have the opportunity to tour such places as the State Capital, the Little White House, and the Governors Mansion. Delegates will participate in team building exercises which allow them to get to know their fellow delegates. Then it’s off to Washington, D.C. where Georgia delegates will meet with hundreds of students from across the country who are representing their local electric cooperatives as well. While in Washington, D.C. the students will experience cruising down the Potomac River, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery, touring the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Supreme Court, the National Cathedral, Ford’s Theater, and the National Archives. The group will visit memorials honoring FDR, Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. Delegates will watch the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and the Silent Drill Platoon perform at the Sunset Parade at the Iwo Jima Memorial. Museums to be explored include the Smithsonian Institution, the Holocaust Museum and the Newseum, an interactive museum about the media sponsored by journalists worldwide. The deadline for 2011 is JANUARY 28, 2011. In order to enter the contest you must:
Papers are judged on the basis of content, creativity, originality, composition, neatness and grammar. After providing the above information to Amicalola EMC, select students participate in an interview to determine the winners.
