Posted August 26, 2009 AMICALOLA EMC WARNS CONSUMERS: BEWARE OF SCAM ARTISTS The electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) in Georgia, including Amicalola EMC, are warning consumers to be wary of imposters who have manufactured another telephone scam in order to obtain personal information. In the latest scheme, the thieves contact EMC consumers, informing victims that the government is paying $350 towards the electric bill of senior citizens. The fraudulent caller claims that in order to process the check, he or she needs social security numbers and EMC account numbers. If the scam artist obtains this information, including credit card numbers, he or she will
call the EMC consumer a few minutes later to "verify" the information in an attempt to defray suspicion
and give the scammers more time to use the data to make fraudulent purchases. Sadly, utilities and consumers have already been victims. Earlier this year, thieves contacted customers by phone, informing victims that their electric bill was past due and that an urgent credit card payment was needed to avoid loss of service within 24 hours. If a customer suspects a caller is fraudulent, Amicalola EMC recommends trying to write down the incoming phone number using caller ID. If anyone has been the victim of this scheme, or has any information leading to possible suspects, they are asked to contact Amicalola EMC and their local law enforcement agency. If a consumer has any questions regarding their account, Amicalola EMC recommends calling their local EMC office. Amicalola EMC is a consumer owned cooperative providing electricity and related services to over 45,000 locations in Bartow, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Murray, Lumpkin and Pickens counties.
Posted August 26, 2009 Operation Roundup® - Now More Important Than Ever The Amicalola EMC Trust Board has overseen the enormously successful Operation Roundup® program for the past ten years. Donations of over one million dollars have gone into the communities served by the electric cooperative for needy individuals and charitable organizations. Never in the history of this Amicalola EMC program has the need for donations been greater than during 2009. With the unemployment rate growing monthly, individuals and community charities are finding their dollars stretched thin. Neighborhood charities are seeing more and more families that need assistance. Trying to do more with less is a challenge for everyone. The cost to participate in Operation Roundup® averages only $6.00 per year. Participating members join together every month and “round-up” their power bills to the next whole dollar amount. In July 2009, organizations approved to receive a donation in Pickens County were: Hill City Elementary, Harmony Elementary, Good Samaritan, Pickens Co. Bd. of Education Student Svc., Pickens Ferst Foundation, Talon Press and The Joy House. Qualifying individuals received donations for assistance with rent payments, mortgage payments, gas and propane bills and medical expenses. If you are a member of Amicalola EMC and you are not already participating in the Operation Roundup® program, please take a moment to consider joining. Your help is needed now more than ever. For more information, please call 706-253-5200.

Posted May 27, 2009 Amicalola EMC Holds Annual Task Force Banquet Call to Action issued on climate change legislation Electricity prices expected to soar Amicalola EMC held its annual Task Force banquet on May 21, 2009 at the Gilmer County Bank Conference Center in Ellijay. With over 80 in attendance, community leaders were brought up to date on climate change legislation now in progress. Paul Wood, President/CEO of Georgia Electric Membership Corporation, the statewide trade association for electric cooperatives, was the guest speaker. Wood urged those in attendance to make their voices heard in Washington, DC. Members of the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, spearheaded by the Waxley-Markey House Bill 2454, are proposing aggressive energy and climate change legislation. Wood explained if consumers did not act now, the future may find them “asleep at the switch”. Congress is working to put a price on carbon dioxide emissions, which may cause electricity prices to rise beyond the reach of many Americans. Major points of the pending climate change legislation include the “cap-and-trade” approach to limit carbon dioxide emissions and new standards regarding renewable energy mandates. Climate change legislation, almost inevitable now, will bear a heavy price tag. Every household in the nation will be affected financially by the outcome. Some estimate a 30% increase in electricity prices due to the new government mandates, which could mean an increase of between $1600 to $3000 for the average American family. Charles Gibson, President/CEO of Amicalola EMC, spoke to attendees issuing a “call to action”. Gibson urged those in attendance to contact US representatives and senators and oppose a federal tax on electricity. Individuals may visit www.ourenergy.coop and send a strong message to Congress asking them to develop a simple, affordable, flexible and effective solution to climate change solutions. Amicalola EMC, headquartered in Jasper, provides electricity to over 45,000 locations in Bartow, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Lumpkin, Murray and Pickens counties.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday, November 14 on the grounds of Lumpkin County High School, where a solar panel has been installed. Amicalola EMC, working jointly with Green Power EMC (the EMC’s statewide renewable energy program), partnered with Lumpkin High to install a 1 kW grid-tied photovoltaic system to harness the energy from the sun and provide on-line data monitoring to the classroom. Educators at the school recently attended a training session and are ready to incorporate this program into their classrooms.
